- Byline: George Hepburn In my youth, I ran a market stall. I liked the banter with the passers by. I enjoyed those sharp winter mornings when I warmed my hands around a mug of tea. I had the making of a street trader. Our stall stocked welfare leaflets and we helped people claim their benefits. As a group of students, we believed we should take our goods out to the market place and we did a brisk trade. The trouble was that the benefits system, even in those days, was fearfully complicated and I eventually gave up my place behind the stall to more zealous and learned colleagues who had studied the rule book. Record number of Citizens Advice volunteers contributed £100 million hours of work last yearCitizens Advice our member body for all local bureau have recently added up the total value volunteers add to the charity. To celebrate this they have produced a video to mark the occasion. This is a huge achievement for us and one that really is heart warming given the additional strain many of our clients are experiencing. At Gateshead Advice Centre our contribution to this as the local Bureau for Gateshead is in the order of 14,500 hours valued in excess of £200,000 for the last financial year. - This week is is National Consumer Week, and we’re using the week to launch a month-long campaign to raise awareness about buying a used car. You can use this opportunity to work in partnership in your area to help educate consumers about used cars. Activities and promotional work during this month will help consumers to become more savvy when it comes to used cars, and support year-round efforts to support consumers with the important decisions when buying a car. We’ll be reminding consumers: Check it, don’t regret it, when it comes to used cars. Used cars are the biggest single issue being reported to Citizens Advice consumer service which deals with over 80,000 used car problems a year.
